How to save for your new home in Manchester
Saving money towards your next home is tough at the best of times and the rising cost of living hasn’t made it any easier. Whether you’re moving into your first home or are a seasoned homeowner, the same struggles arise.
That’s why we’re sharing our helpful tips and tricks to save better – and faster.
De-clutter before moving
Letting go of your old things can be tricky. Some hold sentimental value, and some you just like, so what do you throw out? First, you have to think if you actually need something, or whether it’s just found a place in your home and is dispensable. If it falls under the second category, chuck it.
Donate or sell old items
You must have been living under a rock for the past decade if you haven’t heard of at least one of the many online selling platforms available today. Packaging and posting belongings might seem like a lot of effort for a few quid, but the numbers soon add up – and what you earn can then go towards the pot for spending on essentials for your new home!
If you feel like you don’t have the time for it, however, gifting and donating old belongings to charity shops and shelters is a great way to get rid of what you don’t need whilst giving back to your community in the process.
Spend wisely
If there’s one thing we’re all guilty of, it’s spending money on things that we don’t need. See something in a store window? Take time to think if you really need it. Some friends want to go out for drinks? Invite them over. Fancy a takeaway? Make a meal from what’s already in the fridge – meal prepping is time-efficient, healthier, and saves money!
We know that everyone deserves a treat now and again; just make sure to hit those budgeting goals.
Ask friends and family
Everyone hates getting a pair of socks for their birthday just for the sake of it, so why not set up a savings account and ask your nearest and dearest to all chip in for your special day? It doesn’t have to be a large amount; every little helps. And, in all honesty, they’ll probably appreciate not having to go to the store.
Before you open a savings account, it is important to do your research to ensure you choose the right one. Speak to different banks to get a bigger picture of which is best for your situation. The same goes for when you apply for a mortgage.
Do up your current home
This is for those of you who are lucky enough to already be on the property ladder.
It might sound counter-productive at first, but giving your current place a new lease of life before putting it on the market will raise the asking price. When prospective buyers come for viewings, they want to be wowed and think, ‘yes, this is the home for me’, first impressions really do count! Everyone loves a bidding war if they really want somewhere, so you could easily make a few thousand in net profit if you get it right.
